So says The New York Times, which notes that the nation’s resurgent patriotism is taking many forms, from an increasing amount of German-language music on the radio to more flag-waving pride and a stable economy that remains the envy of Europe in dark times. Certainly, the same could be argued for Deutschland’s auto industry. Having weathered the threat of upstart luxury foes from Japan over the last 20 years, Germany’s premium brands have fought through their own crises to emerge stronger and with more than a bit of swagger in their step. You’ll remember that, for some time now, German marques have been trying to unceasingly convince us of their technical brilliance through things like all-in-one dashboard controllers, willfully disagreeable styling and the steadfast adherence to After enduring a near-death experience at the hands of 60 Minutes during the ‘Unintended Acceleration’ fiasco of the Eighties, Ingolstadt has only truly caught fire in the last five years or so, but now it’s white-hot and giving its fellow countrymen at BMW and Benz fits. Its latest offering, the 2011 A7 Sportback, promises to turn up the heat on the budding luxury five-door segment, so we headed to the Mediterranean island of Sardinia to see if Audi might have a good reason to indulge in a bit of horn-tooting of its own. | Report: Toyota urges judges to throw out unintended acceleration lawsuits Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:36 AM PDT Filed under: Government/Legal, Safety, Toyota
Some of the lawsuits have been bundled for pre-trial rulings. These consumer cases claim that the quality woes the recalled Toyota models face have driven down the value of those products substantially. Likewise, the company’s claims of quality, safety and reliability have been called into question. Toyota has responded by saying that any claims made in its advertisements were opinion and to be taken as such. The combined lawsuits are being handled in Santa Ana, Californa, where Toyota asked the judge to dismiss the cases against the company. | Hotter Subaru Forester in the works? Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:35 AM PDT Filed under: Performance, Crossover, Subaru, Misc. Auto Shows, Australia Scooby fans down under might get the first look at an STI version of the Subaru Forester meant for global markets. It’s only speculation at this point, but Subaru has said it will bring a “sporty SUV,” and the Sydney Morning Herald figures an additionally boosted Forester makes the most sense. Regardless of whether such a beast would wear an STI badge – if it exists at all – the theory goes that it would get an STI-like jump in power above the turbocharged Forester currently on sale in Australia. The JDM version of the Forester STI, on sale for five years, puts down 322 horsepower – that’s 26 more ponies than are available in the Aussie WRX STI. The Forester is already the top-selling compact SUV in Australia. Right now the most powerful version is the 227-hp XT model, so a boost in gumption would place it incontestably above the 268-hp Toyota RAV4 and 235-hp Mazda CX-7. Subaru won’t confirm anything else about what will be revealed, except that it could go worldwide. | Despite what you may have heard, Rolls-Royce Hyperion one-off not for sale Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:34 AM PDT Filed under: Car Buying, Convertible, Rolls-Royce, UK, Luxury Pininfarina Hyperion – Click above for high-res image gallery For the second year in a row, the coachbuilt Pininfarina-bodied Rolls-Royce Hyperion has been offered for sale – except, for the second year in a row, it’s not really for sale. Last year the convertible, built for an Englishman who owns the tooling and rights to build another one, was put on James List for €4.5 million. It was soon discovered that a third party was slyly listing the a set of body panels to make your Drophead Coupe look like the Hyperion, not the actual car. This week the Hyperion was listed again, this time at Pistonheads, only the price had gone up to €7 million. The man who commissioned the car again piped up to say there’s no truth to it this time, and that “the figure mentioned was ridiculous.” So take this as a PSA if you’re on the lookout for a $9.1 million car: this one’s a scam. | Paris Preview: 2011 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS [UPDATED] Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:32 AM PDT Filed under: Coupe, Performance, Paris Motor Show, Crossover, Porsche 2011 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS – Click above for high-res image gallery If you’re in the market for a new 911, but don’t want the same Carrera S as your neighbor and the GT3 is just a wee bit too hardcore for your tastes, we don’t understand you. Thankfully, Porsche does and the answer to your prayers is coming to Paris. Meet the 2011 Porsche Carrera 911 GTS, the new middle-child of the ass-engined family. If the body work looks familiar, that’s because it’s cribbed from the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 – a trick Porsche has pulled off several times in the past. Nestled between that 44mm wider track is an upgraded 3.8-liter flat-six putting out 408 horsepower (23 more than the standard S, 27 less than the GT3) and 310 pound-feet of torque, now peaking at 4,200 rpm – 200 rpm earlier than in the S. Power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels (and as it should be), with a manual six-speed transmission coming standard and a seven-speed PDK as an option. Select the Sport Chrono package along with the dual-clutch ‘box, and Porsche claims you’ll be cracking off four-second 0-60 runs all day long. Aside from the widened haunches, the GTS is set apart by its 19-inch center-hub RS Spyder wheels, SportDesign front and rear fascias, black Alcantara trim and assorted body and interior bits. After the GTS debuts in Paris, sales of both the coupe and cabriolet versions will begin early next year, with a starting price of $103,100 and $112,900, respectively. Full details in the press blast after the break. UPDATE: More high-res images in the gallery below and a video added after the jump. | Report: Porsche returning to the Detroit Auto Show Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:32 AM PDT Filed under: Detroit Auto Show, LA Auto Show, Paris Motor Show, Porsche For the past few years, part of our auto shows preparations included listing all the manufacturers who weren’t going to show. This year, things could be a little different. Porsche has announced its intention to return to the Detroit Auto Show after an absence of three years. Since the market is back up and Porsche sales have joined it, the Stuttgart marque might have decided that it should say hello to its little friends at the NAIAS. With the Porsche 911 GTS coming to Paris Motor Show and the Cayman Clubsport (maybe) coming to the LA Auto Show, perchance the Detroit show will get the next generation 911… or the fabled Speedster. | Video: Nissan and this polar bear want to love you, if you drive a Leaf Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:32 AM PDT Filed under: Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Nissan, Electric Nissan Leaf “Polar Bear” spot – Click above to watch video after the jump As subtle as a box of hammers to the face, global warming’s most iconic animal has taken a starring role in the latest advertisement for the Nissan Leaf. Called, simply, “Polar Bear,” the one-minute spot follows a polar bear on a trek from watching glaciers calve into the sea down south through a city and into a residential neighborhood to find a man about to start his commute. Then, well, you’ll see. Check it out For comparison, we’ve also pasted Nissan’s ad from June about the “New Car,” which highlights the changes the Leaf will bring to the industry, below. This ad shows off the ways the Leaf is different from other cars, including the tidbit that it will be made of at least 30 percent post-consumer material. While “New Car” is all about smartphones and batteries and other tech, the polar bear ad is all emotion. Still, the new spot does miss a chance to show the driver unplugging the Leaf before getting in, which would help get a little bit of that “new car” messaging across. Watch both here. | Video(s): Mini Countryman WRC gets wrung out Posted: 16 Sep 2010 07:31 AM PDT Filed under: Motorsports, Europe, Videos, Hatchback, Mini, Racing 2011 Mini Countryman WRC – Click above to watch video after the jump If it looks like a WRC racer, sounds like a WRC racer and moves like a WRC racer, chances are it will be able to handle itself against the rest of the pros on the global rally stage. We’ve already gotten a few quick glimpses of the Mini Countryman WRC thanks to a handful of still photos from the beater’s development at the Prodrive studios, but so far, we haven’t been able to see the car in action. Consider that problem taken care of. A few videos have cropped up on the YouTubes showing the car being put through its paces over some pretty grueling gravel stages in Portugal. From what we can see, the racer is plenty quick, if not a bit unsorted. We’re guessing that the mechanical wizards at Prodrive will have the car fit for duty well before it knocks skulls with the rest of the heathens in the WRC. Now the only real question is whether or not Mini is going to offer some variant of the go-fast pieces found on the WRC bruiser to the masses. We’re thinking we could rock a Countryman with a lower stance, meaner turbo and physics-bending brakes. Hit the jump to take a look at a few of the videos yourself.
