VW seeks to show its value by asking how much your life is worth

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 07:36 PM PDT

Volkswagen’s UK arm has come up with a True Life Costs configurator that will put a tab on how much you spend over time depending on whether you live like David Beckham or a pensioner in Brixton. Starting with the figure that the average Briton spends £1,785,264 ($2,761,383 U.S.) over a lifetime, £6,532.17 ($10,104.38 U.S.) of that on to-go food and £669.92 ($1,036.27 U.S.) on butter, you can send that number up or down by playing with budgets in six different lifestyle categories.

The best part about the exercise could be the narrator’s intonations. But VW’s real aim is to show you how much more you can take a pound if you include a Polo, Golf or Tiguan in the budget – or even better, if you include three or four of them over time. That way you’ll have more left over for pit lane fun, which is just as obscenely expensive over there as it is over here…

You’ve seen NASCAR’s Car of Tomorrow – now meet its British counterpart. Based on the Toyota Avensis, this Next Generation Touring Car is the first of a new breed of cars set to take over the British Touring Car Championship starting next season.

Although Toyota isn’t competing in the series with a works team, it has supplied the donor car and body shell to GPR Motorsport to use as the basis for its new touring car, built to revised BTCC regulations. The Avensis is, after all, a British-built car – one that enjoys broad sales success in the UK and across Europe.

The Avensis NGTC will make its debut at the last round of this season’s championship on October 9 at Brands Hatch, where two-time BTCC champion James Thompson will take the wheel. In the meantime, click below to view the first sketches of how the new contender will look, or follow the jump for the full press release.

Nissan is recalling a number of models due to overheating Garmin navigation units. Cars, trucks and SUVs equipped with Nuvi 750, 760 and 765 GPS devices are at risk for a vehicle fire due to overheating batteries in the devices. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects Nissan’s Altima, Frontier, Pathfinder, Rogue, Sentra, Versa and Xterra models sold with the Garmin devices between 2008 and 2010. NHTSA does not say exactly how many vehicles will be effected by the defective batteries.

Garmin technicians will make the necessary repairs to the GPS units by replacing the battery with a new, less-toasty unit and adding an additional spacer between the battery and the rest of the device. The repair won’t cost owners anything other than a little time and a trip to the local dealership. Nissan will notify owners directly about the recall, which is scheduled to begin sometime during this month. Suzuki is facing a similar recall, as well – these Garmin navigation units are fitted in the SX4, Grand Vitara and Equator.

Paris Preview: Mini electric concept drives on two wheels

Mini Scooter E concept- Click above for high-res image gallery

Mini has shared plans with its Facebook fans (all 370,702 of them, making the automaker even more popular than David Hasselhoff) to bring its latest electric concept to the Paris Motor Show. Sporting the colors and insignia of the all-electric Mini E, a trio of drawings reveal a scooter with a Vespa-esque rear end following up a somewhat less successful fascia. The Mini-style mirrors are a nice touch while the turn signals remind of the BMW Isetta, which almost saves the design from its bland headlight, but its departure still seems significantly superior to its arrival. Perhaps it will look better when we see it in the metal. Maybe even better than its Smart competition.

More interesting than its aesthetics are hints at the mechanicals. It looks like – and feel free to correct us in the comments if you think differently – that both the front and rear wheels contain motors. This arrangement could also foretell some regenerative braking, though the extra engineering might add too significantly to the price tag should the scooter ever make it to a retail outlet near you (we said outlet, get it?). Also of interest is that little box that would be located between your shins if you were astride the little beastie facing what we hope is a Mini-style speedometer. Radio? GPS? Pedestrian warning system? We’ll let you know in a few weeks.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe spy shotWe know that Mercedes-Benz is planning on rolling out both a coupe and convertible version of its popular C-Class sedan, and now we also have an idea of what the interior is going to look like. We’re still quite curious to see the upcoming luxury coupe parked next to its two-door E-Class brethren. The E-Class currently rides on the C-Class platform and it will be interesting to see how the two vehicles stack up in the size department.

We have some burning questions to ask the automaker and we hope to have answers courtesy of the upcoming Paris Motor Show. What are the price points for the 2011 C-Class coupe, cabrio, and redesigned sedan? Will the two-door C-Class ride on the same platform as the sedan? Most importantly, when can we get the keys to a C63 coupe?

2011 Mazda BT-50 pickup rendering

2011 Mazda BT-50 rendering – click above to enlarge

The Australian International Motor Show will be welcoming a new Mazda along with that mysterious Subaru. The next generation of the Mazda BT-50 pickup is scheduled to premiere on October 15 as an “active lifestyle vehicle.”

We’re not sure how the “modern and refined styling” will radically alter the Aussie’s take on the BT-50 or trucks in general, but according to Mazda it is a “new type of vehicle” possessed of a “universally recognizable beauty” that will increase “anticipation of the driving pleasure to come.” We suppose we’ll find out what all that means – beyond a hyperactive marketing department – come October. In the meantime, there’s a press release after the jump to wet our Aussie readers’ chops. Chance of U.S. importation to replace the now-departed B-Series? Not likely, mate.

Kia Soul Tiger Edition

Kia Soul Tiger Edition? We think not – Click above for high-res image gallery

User AiboPet over at the SoulHamsters forum happened upon one very interesting Kia Soul Sport while cruising the Kia North America fleet lot recently. The boxy hatch was caught wearing some unique vinyl graphics, complete with tiger stripes down both sides and large paw print on its hind-end. While the forum immediately caught fire with the notion that Kia is planning yet another special-edition version of its youth-oriented crossover, the truth may be a little tamer.

Kia tells Autoblog that it has no plans to roll out a new Tiger Edition Soul, nor will any other big-cat themed models be available from dealers anytime soon. Sorry, feline fans.

Of course, that doesn’t exactly answer what’s up with this particular graphics package. Kia says that when the company’s designers are done with special show-circuit jobs, it just parks them outside with the rest of its testers. This could be a stillborn special edition or a SEMA package that never made it to the show floor. Your guess is as good as ours. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Rendered Speculation: Jaguar’s 3 Series rival

Posted: 14 Sep 2010 07:28 PM PDT

Jaguar RenderingThere’s a pretty hefty rumor claiming Jaguar is aiming to take on the BMW 3 Series with a new mid-sized fighter of its own. According to Auto Express, the suits at the big cat’s parent company, Tata, have already given the project the go-ahead. The new machine will serve as a suitable replacement for the long-dead X-Type and sit below the XF in the Jaguar chain of command. Beyond that, there are few details in terms of what to expect if and when it hits production.

But that hasn’t stopped Auto Express from putting forth a few possibilities. According to the site, it’s entirely possible that the baby Jaguar could get its power from either a turbocharged, Ford-sourced four-cylinder gasoline engine or a more potent turbo-diesel six-cylinder hybrid drivetrain.

Hey, dreaming is free.

Behind either miracle mill would be a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. We’ll supposedly know more about the car sometime soon as AE reports the new Jaguar will be in dealer lots as soon as 2012.
